61st Legislative Assembly
The 61st Legislative Assembly consisted of a Senate with 47 senators and a House of Representatives with 94 representatives. The 61st Legislative Assembly organized December 1-3, 2008, and convened in regular session on Tuesday, January 6, 2009, to Monday, May 4, 2009.
Generally, the senators from odd-numbered districts were elected to four-year terms at the 2006 general election and the senators from even-numbered districts were elected to four-year terms at the November 2008 general election.
Two representatives are elected from each of 47 senatorial districts. Generally, the representatives from odd-numbered districts were elected to four-year terms at the 2006 general election and the representatives from even-numbered districts were elected to four-year terms at the November 2008 general election.
There were 1,021 bills (577 in the House and 444 in the Senate), 104 concurrent resolutions (66 in the House and 38 in the Senate), and 3 memorial resolutions introduced during the regular session. Of the total 1,128 bills and resolutions introduced, 322 House bills, 308 Senate bills, 39 House concurrent resolutions, 25 Senate concurrent resolutions, and 1 House and 1 Senate memorial resolutions passed. The Governor signed 630 bills into law. He vetoed five bills. The vetoes were all item vetoes that did not affect the entire bill. Thus, 630 bills have, or will, become law.
