58th Legislative Assembly

The 58th Legislative Assembly consisted of a Senate with 47 senators and a House of Representatives with 94 representatives. The 58th Legislative Assembly organized December 2-4, 2002, and met in regular session from Tuesday, January 7, 2003, through Friday, April 25, 2003. The Legislative Assembly also met in special session from Monday, May 5, 2003, through Wednesday, May 7, 2003, to address education, information technology, and corrections funding vetoed by the Governor.

Generally, the senators from even-numbered districts were elected to four-year terms at the November 2000 general election and the senators from odd-numbered districts were elected to four-year terms at the 2002 general election.

Two representatives are elected from each of 47 senatorial districts. Generally, the representatives from even-numbered districts were elected to four-year terms at the November 2000 general election and the representatives from odd-numbered districts were elected to four-year terms at the 2002 general election.

There were 924 bills (504 in the House and 420 in the Senate), 119 concurrent resolutions (79 in the House and 40 in the Senate), 1 Senate resolution, and 2 memorial resolutions introduced during the regular session. Of the total 1,046 bills and resolutions introduced, 285 House bills, 285 Senate bills, 57 House concurrent resolutions, 27 Senate concurrent resolutions, 1 Senate resolution, and 2 memorial resolutions passed. The Governor signed 564 bills into law. He vetoed six bills, and all of the vetoes were sustained. Two vetoes were item vetoes and did not affect the entire bill. Thus, 566 of the 570 bills have, or will, become law.

There were six bills introduced and passed during the special session. The Governor signed the bills on May 13, 2003.
